What is a Bitcoin-backed loan?

A Bitcoin-backed loan lets you borrow USD using Bitcoin as collateral without selling it. The lender holds your BTC for the loan term. If your collateral value falls below a set threshold, the lender may sell some Bitcoin to repay the loan.

Do Bitcoin loans require a credit check?

Most Bitcoin-backed lenders do not run a traditional credit check. Because the loan is fully collateralized by Bitcoin, creditworthiness is determined by the value of your BTC, not your credit score. Some lenders still require identity verification (KYC).

What is rehypothecation and why does it matter?

Rehypothecation means a lender uses your pledged Bitcoin as collateral for their own borrowing. If the lender becomes insolvent, your Bitcoin may be tied up in bankruptcy proceedings. Lenders that hold BTC in segregated accounts or via qualified custodians without rehypothecation carry lower custodial risk.

What is LTV and what happens if Bitcoin drops in value?

LTV (Loan-to-Value) is your loan amount divided by your collateral value. If Bitcoin's price falls and your LTV rises above the lender's liquidation threshold (typically 80–90%), the lender may issue a margin call requiring you to add collateral or repay part of the loan.
